Frequently Asked QuestionsAnswers to your most commonly asked questions.
Who are you?
My name is Brett and I’m a 29-year-old creative maker. I’m an ex-expat who lived and worked in Thailand for 4 years before returning to the UK with my girlfriend of 11 years. I am also an obsessive self-learner and problem solver who loves to keep things simple. I believe that just because the process or techniques are complicated doesn’t mean that the final product has to be. This is my philosophy behind everything I design, from my work to my lifestyle. I believe in using software, systems and processes that make our lives easier (which I why I love Howard, our robot vacuum cleaner).
I am a fan of simplicity, minimalism and thoughtful design.
Where are you based?
Currently, I am based in Burton-On-Trent, Staffordshire, UK. If you have heard of the town before but aren’t quite sure where you recognise it from it might be the back of a Marmite jar (you either love it or hate it – I myself am a lover) or from the back of a beer can. Burton has a rich brewing history and many of the UK’s popular brands are made here today. Of course, when I was younger I didn’t appreciate any of this but I now find it all to be fascinating. And – in case you are wondering – yes, occasionally the combined smells of the brewery and the Marmite factory are nose-pinching.
What do you do?
I am an independent creative Divi website designer. People come to me because they want to create or redesign their website for any number of reasons, such as:
- They have a new business and need an online presence.
- They are a non-profit who want to share their cause.
- They are a talented individual trying to make a difference.
- They are an established business whose current website is outdated.
My job is to listen, listen, listen and then solve the problem. Sometimes the solution is simple and sometimes it isn’t, but the end result is always the same: a beautiful Divi website that is easy to edit and delights their customers.
What is Divi?
Divi is a premium WordPress theme made by Elegant Themes. Although, if you ask me it is actually much more than just another WordPress theme. To me, Divi is more like a solid foundation and a framework for building wonderful websites that anyone can understand.
Previously when it came to having your own website it was overcomplicated. Your designer would create your website, set everything up and then send you on your way. Now, this was great until you realised your price list, contact information or services were out of date! You’d then have to get back in touch with your web-guy and hope he can sort you out for a reasonable fee…
We’ve come a long way since then (especially with the introduction of Divi) and now people who have Divi websites can use a really intuitive editor to change their website. What once required you to pick up a copy of ‘Coding for Dummies’ and spend a few months figuring things out can now be done in just a few minutes. No code, no stress and no need to pay anyone else to do it for you (unless you want them to).
Divi costs $89 per year if you were to buy it for yourself, however, every Divi website I design comes preinstalled with the Divi theme. What this means is that you’ll get all of the benefits of Divi without the annual cost.
Who do you work with?
As an independent designer, I work one-on-one with non-profits, passionate individuals and small businesses. So whether you want to spread the word about your life-changing cause or you want your customers to find you online, I can help.
I work with talented people from a variety of disciplines; bloggers, creatives, coaches, start-ups and professionals.
I also love to collaborate with digital agencies that need professional, modern Divi websites for their clients.
If any of these sounds like you, then get in touch and let’s chat.
Do I need to hire a developer?
Traditionally a website design is someone who creates the look and
When I say that I am a website designer what I actually mean is that I create websites, from start to finish. The role of designer and developer is combined so that not only does it reduce the time it takes to create your website, but it also reduces costs too.

Do you host the websites you design?
If you’d prefer to leave all of the heavy lifting and jargon-busting to someone else then why not consider letting me take care of it all? I offer affordable, secure hosting for clients who prefer not to worry about the technical stuff.
Plans start from £35/month and include things like updates and personal support.
If you’d prefer to manage the hosting of your website yourself then I like to offer two suggestions based on your requirements:
- If you have a smaller budget then I recommend signing up for a Managed WordPress package with Go Daddy. I have used this hosting package for many of my own websites and believe it offers a great budget option if you are just getting started. Go Daddy Managed WordPress packages include –
- Free daily backups & 1-click restore
- Premium WordPress Hosting platform
- Free 24/7 support (for Go Daddy related issues, they won’t help you with your website)
- Automatic WordPress core software and security updates
- If you have a more budget then you should consider signing up for WordPress hosting with Flywheel. With a slew of additional features (all of which add genuine value), Flywheel hosting is some of the best you will
find foryour website. All Flywheel websites include –
- Automated nightly backups.
- Blazing fast speeds (better for ranking higher on search engines).
- Hacker-free security (if you value your website, this is a huge deal).
- Free SSL certificate (This tells your visitors and search engines that your site is safe and can help you rank higher in search engines).
- Expert WordPress support available 24/7.
- Built-in site stats.
- Recommended by WordPress.org.
Go Daddy Managed WordPress hosting is the absolute minimum standard for hosting that I recommend. Wherever you choose to host your website it should offer regular backups of your site. Trust me, losing your website because of a bad update, a hack or changes someone made can be devastating.
Hey Brett – the worst thing happened. I hired another person to quickly change a couple things and he wasn’t understanding it so told him it wasn’t working out. He cancelled everything and deleted all my files. Did you have a backup anywhere of the site you built?
[Fortunately I had created a backup of Amanda’s new website.]
… Oh Brett, I wish I could leave you another good review. I found my backups thanks to you because I remember you wrote to me to download and save them. THANK YOU!
If you want complete peace of mind you should seriously consider hosting your website with Flywheel. The addition of website security alone more than warrants the extra cost. The SSL certificate is another wonderful feature to have (one which Go Daddy charges an extra £54.99 a year for) as it lets people know that they can enter information like email addresses or credit card details into your website safely.
Do I need a self-hosted WordPress site?
You sure do. I exclusively design self-hosted WordPress.org sites using the Divi theme. If you need help transferring your website from another service such as Blogger or Wix please get in touch for a custom quote.
